“When the Fed drags interest rates down to zero, it is attempting to do what all tyrants always try to do: Eliminate surprises, hold on to power, and keep the wealth headed in their direction. But the future still happens. Trying to avoid surprises has the effect of compressing the unknown, like a pent-up explosion, making them all the more surprising. What surprise it will be when stocks and bonds crash, despite the Fed´s efforts to keep them up!
Stocks and bonds are at record highs. Not because they are worth more, but merely because the yield on cash is at a record low. But having destorted the key signal, the information content out of the interest rate signal has been lost. Investors are lost at sea.
Excluding excess credit, total assets will be 30% lower then they are today.
