I GP för någon dag sedan publicerades en artikel om den franske filosofen Michel de Montaignes (1533-1592) essäer.
Av någon anledning har de undvikit att skriva om följande mycket viktiga saker, där Montaigne var helt ”ute och cyklade!”
THE MONTAIGNE DOGMA: ”The gain of one man is the damage of another; no man profits but by the loss of others.” Detta är “The quintessence of Mercantilism.” A school of thought wich advocated beggar-thy-neighbor, protectionist international policies.
Motsatsen är t.ex. David Hume (1711-1776): That commerce was not an international “zero-sum game.” He concluded in his popular essay: “On the Jealousy of Trades”:
“Not only as a man, but as a British subject, I pray for the flourishing commerce of Germany, Spain, Italy, and even France itself. I am at least certain, that Great Britain, and all those nations, would flourish more, did their sovereigns and ministers adopt such enlarged and benevolent sentiments towards each other.”
Trevligt och harmoniskt av Hume! (man kan dock lugnt konstatera att denne Montaigne inte var någon som stimulerade till harmoni direkt…).
