“The American Republic is already largely a fiction. Congress blabs. The president distracts. The Deep State rules. Over time all democratic republics degrade and degenerate.
The republic may begin with someone like Jefferson, who read Homer in the original Greek. But it ends up with someone like Trump, who does not read at all.
The republic may be designed by the mind, but it ends up as a foul product of mob emotion.
As a republic matures, it slides down market. The rabble rallies to campaign slogans and admires TV idols. The media – dependent on the mass of consumers for ad sales – sinks, to, stooping as low as possible to scoop up as many eyeballs, clicks, and cat videos as it can. This drags down public discussion to a level below the lowest. There is no time or place for real thinking.
Deregulating a late-stage, degenerate empire is almost impossible. It is simply to infested with powerful insiders, who get their jobs, incomes, awards, and status from the fed´s doddles.
The trade war and a fatter Pentagon budget will add more opportunities for these win-lose bossy pants.
On balance, Team Trump is probably adding more to the swamp than it is eliminating.”
