I så gott som alla ”PK” Hollywood filmer utpekas alltid Lincoln som den bästa, finaste och ”störste” presidenten de har haft på andra sidan sjön.
”The best of presidents? Perhaps the worst.
Lincoln closed down hundreds of newspapers that opposed his actions, and jailed thousands of men after suspending habeas corpus.
He had forced The South to remain part of a union they had every right to leave.
He was directly responsible for the unnecessary deaths of 750 000 people.
All of this was camouflaged with rhetoric about freeing the slaves, something Lincoln cared very little about.
In fact Lincoln freed no slaves, for his famous Emancipation Proclamation applied only to the Confederate states, where he held no power.
He wrote it as a matter of expediency. His sole purpose was to keep Europeans – who had successfully abolished slavery without civil war and now hoped for the dissolution of the United States – from supporting the South.”
